Val Thorens is a winter sports resort in the Tarentaise Valley, located in the commune of Belleville, in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was developed as a greenfield site from 1969 and inaugurated for the winter season in 1971.
With a village peaking at 2,280 metres above sea level, the Val Thorens resort is the highest resort in Europe, although its maximum altitude of 3,230 metres is less than the maximum altitude of 3,880 metres of the Zermatt resort in Switzerland. The resort is part of the 3 Valleys ski area.
