Presentation of Tignes – Espace Killy

Tignes is a French municipality located in the Vanoise massif in the Haute-Tarentaise, in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It had a population of 2,358 in 2016.

Originally, this mountain commune was composed of a central village and several hamlets, mainly oriented to agriculture. The central village was destroyed and engulfed following the construction of the Chevril dam, which was launched in 1952. On its heights, Tignes became during the following decades a ski resort located at more than 2,000 meters of altitude on two main sites (Tignes le Lac and Tignes Val Claret) and internationally renowned for its ski area, coupled with that of Val-Claired’Isère under the name Espace Killy. The resort hosted three freestyle skiing events at the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games, and the 2010 X-Games Europe Winter.
